Spectroscopy of the Double Quasars Q1343+266AB: The Relationship between Galaxies and QSO C IV Absorption Lines
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present spectra of QSOs 1343+266A, B, covering Ly to C IV emission at 2 A resolution, and nd further evidence that this system is not gravitationally lensed. We see, however, a large number of Ly and some C IV absorption features common to both spectra. The frequency of C IV lines in common indicates that these absorbers have a radius close to the sightline separation, 39 h 1 kpc (q o = 0:5), implying a spatial number density of these absorbers the same as current day L > 0:3L galaxies. Furthermore, the velocity mismatch for C IV systems indicates absorber masses in the range 10 11 M < M < 10 12 M . These results con rm that typical galaxies cause QSO C IV-line absorption.

Spectroscopy of the Double Quasars Q1343+266AB: A New Determination of the Size of Ly Forest Absorbers
We have obtained spectroscopy of Q 1343+266 AB, a pair of quasars at redshift z = 2:03 with a projected separation of 9.5 arcseconds. This system is well-suited for probing the Ly forest, since the two component spectra show several Ly lines in common and several others not. Using Bayesian statistics, under the idealization of uniform-radius spherical absorbers, we nd that the Ly cloud radius a...
متن کاملIntrinsic Absorption in Radio-Selected QSOs
Moderate resolution spectra have been recorded for a sample of radio-selected QSOs (z ∼ 2.5) discovered in the “Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty centimeters” (FIRST) VLA survey. This work is motivated by the study of a heterogeneous set of QSO absorption line spectra that showed that as many as 36% of the absorbers normally thought to be intergalactic are correlated with physical propert...
متن کاملOn the Origin of the Clustered Qso Metal Absorption Lines
Observations show that there is significant clustering of QSO metal absorption lines within the range of velocity dispersion between 200km/sec and 600 km/sec. With a reasonable supernova rate, it is shown that high velocity gases driven by SNe and/or strong stellar winds could explain the clustered absorptions, provided that QSO metal-line absorbers are galactic halos or dwarf galaxies. Rich cl...

The existence of BAL outflows in only radio-quiet QSOs was thought to be an important clue to mass ejection and the radio-loud – radio-quiet dichotomy. Recently a few radio-loud BAL QSOs have been discovered at high redshift. We present evidence that PKS1004+13 is a radio-loud BAL QSO. It would be the first known at low-redshift (zem = 0.24), and one of the most radio luminous. For PKS 1004+13,...
متن کاملThe Absence of Diffuse Gas around the Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy Leo I1
We have obtained spectra of three QSO/AGNs with the GHRS aboard the Hubble Space Telescope to search for absorption from low column density gas in the halo of the dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy Leo I. The probe sight lines pass 2.1, 3.7, and 8.1 kpc from the center of the galaxy, but no C IV, Si II, or Si IV absorption is found at the velocity of Leo I. The absence of low-ionization species sug...
